[Travel] Porto – Portwein und Sonnenschein

Wow, ich kann’s gar nicht glauben: Ich hab euch direkt meine Reise nach Porto letztes Jahr vorenthalten! Kein Wort, keine Fotos, keine Reisetips. Dabei hat mich Portugal wirklich positiv überrascht. Hier kommen also meine Eindrücke:

Ein Kurztrip nach Porto

Up and down

Porto ist vor allem eins – hügelig. Eigentlich sogar schon bergig. Bequeme Schuhe und ein wenig Ausdauer muss man da schon mitbringen aber dafür wird man auch mit einer wirklich gigantisch-schönen Aussicht belohnt! Zum Beispiel nach einer Auffahrt mit der Funicular dos Guindais, einer kleinen Bahn hoch vom Hafen zu den Weinkellern. Dabei hat man während der Fahrt einen tollen Ausblick. Wer fit zu Fuß ist, kann den Weg natürlich auch gerne laufen. Außerdem habt ihr einen Wahnsinnsblick vom Jardim do Morro in Portos ›Nebenstadt‹ Vila Nova de Gaia – der Duoro, die Ponte Luis II und die gesamte Altstadt liegen euch zu Füßen!

What to do

Sightseeing macht hungrig und durstig. Die Lösung? Zucker! Am besten in seiner absolut unwiderstehlichsten Form: Pasteís de Nata. Vanillepudding-Blätterteig-Törtchen. Muss ich noch mehr sagen?

Und außerdem muss man in Porto ja wohl unbedingt Portwein, den süßen Dessertwein der Portugiesen, probieren – so wurde mir zumindest gesagt und weil er dazu gehört, geb ich das mal so an euch weiter. Mich persönlich bringt ja keiner dazu, ihn nochmal zu trinken, aber das ist ja Geschmackssache. Und die Führung durch die Weinkeller ist schon einen Ausflug wert. Wir waren in der Calém Weinkellerei, aber ich hab schon ein paar Mal gehört, den leckersten Portwein soll’s bei Taylor’s geben.

What else to do

Drei mickrige Tage haben leider bei Weitem nicht ausgereicht, um so eine tolle Stadt kennen zu lernen. Vor allem, weil wir den letzten Tag selbstverständlich am Meer verbringen mussten: Wunderschön, aber saukalt – wie der Atlantik eben so ist. Trotzdem war’s für einen ordentlichen Sonnenbrand warm genug. Wie geht’s zum Meer? Ganz einfach mit der Tram!

Where to stay

Das PILOT Hostel liegt direkt im Stadtzentrum, hat eine tolle Außenterrasse mit Grill und Wasserfall und eine gemütliche Küche. Außerdem wichtig: Es ist nur 5 Minuten von der U-Bahn (U-Bahnhof Aliados) entfernt, aber trotzdem in einer total ruhigen Gegend. Kostenloste Walking Tours und Pub Crawls werden auch angeboten. Von mir also eine echte Empfehlung.

Und sonst so?

Ist Portugal so überhaupt gar kein kleines Spanien oder Italien. E ist irgendwie komplett anders und davon war ich wirklich positiv überrascht. Ich. will. mehr. Algrave und Lissabon – ab auf die Bucket List!

Wow, I can’t believe that I didn’t tell you about my trip to Porto last year! No word, no pictures, no travel tips. I have to admit though, that the city made a really positive impression on me. So here’s what we did:

A short trip to Porto

Up and down

Oh my god how hilly can a city be? When going to Porto, you need a comfortable pair of shoes and a decent fitness. But if you dare to climb up the hills, the views are just magically impressive! If your not that sporty you can take the  Funicular dos Guindais, a little train going up from the harbour to the wine cellars (yes, they are called cellars and yes, they are up the mountain) and enjoy the view during the ride. If you’re up for a little hike, you can go to the  Jardim do Morro in Vila Nova de Gaia – the Duoro, the Ponte Luis II and the old town are at your feet.

Let the good times roll

Sightseeing makes you hungry and thirsty! Well, I’ve got something for you: Pasteís de Nata. Puff pastry, filled with vanilla pudding. Do I need to tell you more?

And for those who are rather thirsty: Porto’s the home of portwine. Well, sweet wine is not exactly my cup of tea but I already heard people rave about it. And I have to admit that I quite enjoyed our tour through the cellars. We were at the Calém cellars, but I heard that the port at Taylor’s is supposed to be the best in town.

What else to do

We only had three days, which is by far not enough to get to know Porto from scratch. The last day, we spend at the beach of course. Lovely but cold – well, it’s the Atlantic ocean at least. Although it still was hot enough for a sunburned nose. And how do you get to the ocean? Just take the tram!

Where to stay

The PILOT Hostel is located right in the city center. There’s a nice terrace with a barbecue and a waterfall fountain as well as a well-equipped kitchen. Also important: It’s only a five minute walk from the underground (station: Aliados). There are free walking tours and pub crawls of course – perfect for a short stay.
